Potassium Nitrate
Skillet or pan

1. Pour 2 parts potassium nitrate and 1 part sugar into a skillet.
2. Set the mixture into low heat. The goal is to caramelize the sugar. When the sugar starts to burn on the side, remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool before continuing.
3. When the mixture has become liquid, pour it into a piece of foil. You can add a wick if you like.
4. Allow the mixture to cool, then peel off the foil.
5. Light the smoke bomb in a place where nothiung will catch fire. It will burn slowly and vigorously and produce smoke.

ATTENTION! Make sure you ask for adult supervision and that you watch out for flammable materials around your work and experiment areas when doing this experiment.

a volcano form
warm water
liquid detergent
baking soda (dash some red food coloring)
vinegar

1. Form some clay around a plastic bottle, leaving the hole at the center
2. Pour the warm water into the bottle until it is almost full. Add some drops of detergent.
3. Pour the baking soda into the water.
3. Pour the vinegar into the baking soda.

You should see red bubbles forming and foaming out of your volcano. This is because of the chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar which forms carbon dioxide, the same chemical present in real volcanic eruptions.

two chairs
string (at least 5 feet long)
a straw
a piece of scotch tape
a balloon

1. Tie one end of the string in one leg of the chair with a tough knot.
2. Notch a small hole into the straw. Insert the straw into the string through the hole and tie the other end of the string into the leg of the other chair. Leave the straw near one chair.
3. Blow air into the balloon and, protecting the end so that the air will not escape, secure the end of the balloon to the straw with a tape. Make sure that the air can escape when the balloon is let go.
4. Let go of the balloon and see it rocket to the other chair.

If the experiment was done right, the straw along with the balloon will rocket to the other chair. This is because of air pressure.

a wine glass

some water or wine

1. Dip your finger in the water or wine, just enough to wet the tip of your finger

2. Slowly draw your finger around the rim of the glass. You should start to hear a sound.

HOW IT HAPPENS: The repeated motion of the finger around the rim of the glass makes a vibration in the air around it, which produces the sound.

TIP: If there is no sound, try wiping your finger dry and repeat the experiment.
